Novak Đoković se nalazi nadomak historijskog uspjeha, ali se uprkos nevjerovatnom rezultatu našao na meti kritika zbog komentara nakon polufinala US Opena protiv Alexandera Zvereva.
Đoković je po završetku meča rekao da se divi Zverevu „i na terenu i van njega“:
Aleksander je veliki šampion, divim mu se i na terenu i van njega. On je jedan od mojih najboljih prijatelja, zajedno smo trenirali i viđamo se stalno u Monaku jer nam je to baza. On je sjajan momak i još bolji igrač, znao sam kad sam izlazio na teren da će ovo biti velika bitka. Dali smo sve na ovom meču, nadam se da smo svima priredili šou.“
Te riječi su Đokovića dovele u nepriliku, jer se našao na udaru Crystal Marie Fleming, profesorice sociologije i afričkih studija.
Ova 39-godišnja Amerikanka izrazila je nezadovoljstvo Đokovićem zbog ovih komentara:
Ne osjećam se dobro zbog Đokovićevih komentara u kojim je izrazio divljenje Zverevu „na i van terena“, kad svi znamo za optužbe Šaripove o zlostavljanju. Veoma uznemirujuće i razočaravajuće“, napisala je ona, aludirajući na niz optužbi koje je na račun Zvereva izrekla njegova bivša devojka OlgaŠaripova.
Not comfortable with Djokovic expressing his “admiration” for Zverev “on and off the court” when we all know about Sharypova’s abuse allegations. Very disturbing and disappointing..
